People on Stamps
Take a careful look at these stamps . . . but don't expect to find YOUR picture on one of them since "no living person shall be honored by portrayal on US postage." Check out the criteria used in the US stamp collection process. Please consider selecting a stamp pictured below and doing some research on the person. If you submit your work to us we may post it here or on the bulletin board at school.

those are sweet
ReplyDeleteThere was one exception to this rule. In 1966, the postal service issued a stamp celebrating American circuses. The image was of a clown, but not just any clown. It was an illustration of Lou Jacobs of Ringling Brother's Circus.
ReplyDeleteThe post office may not have realized that the picture was of a specific, recognizable clown. Lou Jacobs' makeup and costume are so wonderfully typical of a clown that it seems as if he represents all clowns.
You can see the 5 cent stamp on this website: http://www.worthpoint.com/blog-entry/collect-circus-stamps-color-variety You can find out more about Lou Jacobs at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Jacobs
Lou Jacobs was a teacher of mine. Later, we taught together at Ringling Bros. Clown College. He was a great guy.
